Contraindications

ConditionSeverityNote
Cardiovascular
Cardiovascular diseaseabsolute

Individuals with coronary artery disease, peripheral vascular disease, Raynaud's phenomenon, or other cardiovascular conditions face elevated ischemia risk from ergoline-mediated vasoconstriction. Cardiovascular dysregulation was documented in a prospective study of LSA-containing seeds at controlled doses.

Psychiatric
Personal or family history of psychosisabsolute

Serotonergic psychedelics as a class carry risk of precipitating acute psychotic episodes in predisposed individuals. A psychosis-like state was documented in a prospective study of LSA-containing seeds. Persons with personal or family history of psychotic disorders (schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder with psychotic features) face elevated risk.

Active depression or suicidal ideationabsolute

Suicidal ideation was documented in 2 recreational users who ingested Argyreia nervosa and Ipomoea seeds (Juszczak & Swiergiel 2013) and in 1 forensic case survivor (Klinke et al. 2010). Persons with active depression or suicidal ideation face elevated risk of worsened psychological state.

Hepatic
Hepatic impairmentrelative

Individuals with hepatic impairment may experience prolonged exposure to ergine and its metabolites due to reduced CYP-mediated clearance. This contraindication is inferred from the CYP2D6 metabolic pathway and general pharmacokinetic principles — no ergine-specific hepatic impairment data exists.

Metabolic
CYP2D6 poor metabolizer statusrelative

CYP2D6 poor metabolizers (approximately 5-10% of Caucasian populations) may experience disproportionately intense and prolonged effects at any given dose due to reduced hepatic metabolism of ergine. This pharmacogenomic risk factor compounds the already extreme dose unpredictability from batch-to-batch alkaloid variability.

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Pregnancyabsolute

Morning glory seeds contain ergonovine, which has potent uterotonic properties. Ingestion during pregnancy carries risk of uterine contraction and miscarriage. This is not a class extrapolation — ergonovine's uterotonic activity is directly established in obstetric pharmacology.

Other
Concurrent serotonergic medicationsabsolute

SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs, Triptans, Tramadol

Co-administration of morning glory seeds with serotonergic medications creates additive serotonergic activity at 5-HT2A and 5-HT1A receptors. No direct clinical case report of LSA combined with an SSRI producing serotonin syndrome was identified; this interaction is classified as theoretical on pharmacodynamic basis. The triptan-ergot interaction is of particular concern given vasoconstriction from both drug classes.

Lithium co-administrationabsolute

Lithium

Lithium co-administration with serotonergic psychedelics is associated with increased seizure risk. This is a class-level contraindication inherited from the 5-HT2A agonist drug class, not specific to ergine.
