About Psychedex

An open-access harm reduction encyclopedia for altered states: cited, human-reviewed, and free.

Mission

Psychedex exists to provide accurate, structured, and accessible information about altered states and psychoactive substances. We believe that people who choose to experiment with altered states deserve reliable data to make informed decisions about their safety.

We neither condone nor condemn psychoactive experimentation. We are primarily concerned with documenting and gathering information to advance the science of mind, consciousness, and neurobiology.

Built by and for people who believe access to accurate information saves lives.

Origins

Psychedex is a parallel fresh start developed by Unity of PsychonautWiki.org, one of the largest psychoactive substance encyclopedias on the internet. We are rebuilding from the ground up with modern tooling, structured data, and AI-assisted workflows.

Initial substance data was seeded from the Bifrost API (api.psychonautwiki.org) and enhanced with additional research sources.

Initial subjective effect documentation was seeded from the work of Josie Kins under PsychonautWiki’s CC BY-SA 4.0 License.

Approach & Methodology

Citation-backedClaims link to PubMed, DOI references, and established harm reduction sources.
Structured dataEvery entry follows a consistent schema: dosage, duration, effects, interactions, sources.
AI-assisted, human-approvedAI drafts entries from research literature. Humans review and approve every publication.
Open accessSafety-critical data is free and will stay free. Nothing important goes behind a paywall.

How we source data, score evidence, review every entry, and correct errors is documented in full on the methodology page.

Privacy

We do not store IP addresses with sessions or contributions. Contributors are pseudonymous, and the link between an account and a pen name exists only for moderation — it is never exposed publicly. Public pages count views without cookies or persistent identifiers; the account areas send nothing.

On law enforcement: we can only hand over what we hold, and we have deliberately arranged not to hold much. The Psychedex app is being rebuilt: it will need no account, and the app itself will send none of your record anywhere. Our host, Vercel, keeps IP addresses in its request logs for its retention period. We do not host sourcing, purchase or vendor information, so there is no transaction record here to request. Anything we would be legally compelled to produce is listed on the privacy page, which is the full and authoritative statement.

License & AI use

Content is CC BY 4.0 (planned): free to read, quote and republish with attribution. Code is source-available post-launch. Safety information is never paywalled.

The same permissions read differently for machines. Retrieval agents that cite a live page are welcome; training-only crawlers are not, because a value memorized into model weights goes stale and cannot be corrected. What an AI system may do with this data — and the rules a dose, an interaction severity, or a provenance tier must travel with — is stated in full on the AI use policy.
