Sandoz Laboratories

organization

A Swiss pharmaceutical company whose Basel laboratories ran the ergot-alkaloid programme that produced LSD-25 in 1938 and, later, isolated and manufactured psilocybin. It distributed both to researchers and clinicians under trade names during the 1950s and 1960s, then withdrew them as the legal and political position changed.

In this corpus it appears as the origin of a body of mid-century clinical literature, and as the reason that literature exists in the form it does: a single supplier, a single set of preparations, and a distribution model that shaped who could study these compounds and how.

What it claims

Manufacture, composition and distribution of specific preparations; the dating of a compound's availability to researchers; the provenance of the mid-century clinical studies that used them.

How well attested

Strong on the facts of manufacture and supply — these are company and regulatory records. Weaker as evidence about effect: the clinical studies of that era predate modern trial standards, frequently lacked blinding or controls, and were conducted with a set of assumptions about these compounds that later work revised. Their value here is historical continuity and provenance, not efficacy.
